THE FRENCH ALPS
offering access to a large area
of ski and snowboard runs. From
traditional Alpine villages like
Samoëns, to renowned resorts
such as Chamonix, Morzine,
and Saint-Gervais, they all have
slightly different personalities,
and many of them are now
marketing themselves as yearround
destinations. St Gervais
les Bains is a beautiful mountain
town that can be reached by
train. In fact you can get on a
train from London all the way
to the ski slopes. It is one of
the most stunning departments
in France, for both summer and
winter visitors.
The Grand Massif ski area in
the Haute-Savoie is right at the
centre of the Alps, has 265km of
pistes and is the fourth largest
ski domain in France. Including
the resorts of Flaine, Les Carroz,
Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt.
It has 62 ski lifts,139 slopes
and year-round cable cars that
ascend to peaks like Aiguilledu-Midi.
In summer, the Grand
Massif is just as popular with
families and adventure seekers
alike. They are drawn to the
fabulous hiking opportunities
and mountain biking - using
the chairlifts for access. There's
an outdoor pool in Samoëns,
a swimming lake in Morillon,
whitewater rafting on the Giffre,
a summer luge in Les Carroz,
plus tennis, pony trekking,
adventure parks, weekly
markets and numerous festivals.
At the top of the Giffre valley
is the quintessential mountain
village of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.
Surrounded by towering peaks,
thundering waterfalls, and,
crucially, no through road, it
offers a peace and tranquility
unrivalled in the Haute-Savoie.
The valley is ideally placed to
provide easy access to Les Gets
and the charming ski station of
Praz-de-Lys-Sommand. In the
last few years, several ski-lifts
have either been upgraded
or added in the Grand Massif.
This is a resort on the up with
year-round appeal and endless
charm.
Leggett agents Jill and Mark
Steward live in the historic town
of Samoëns, located in the
stunning Vallée du Giffre which
lies between the Chamonix
and Morzine valleys. "In recent
years, it's become a year-round
resort with a sizeable resident
population making it the perfect
spot. We both love living and
working in this beautiful part of
France and are only an hour from
the nearest airport Geneva."
